When Alan Harper first contacted me in August 2007, enquiring about buying a conservatory for him to erect, I thought this was a normal enquiry. Until I discovered that Alan was born in 1930 and so was the wonderful age of 77.
Alan had a covered area outside his bungalow which he initially thought that he would buy some doors and windows to enclose the area. He then planned to buy a roof later when he had the funds available.
A couple of months after I had quoted for this, Alan rang to say that he was not allowed to drive any more, had sold his car, and could now afford to buy the whole conservatory. This he did and he erected a Double Hipped Edwardian conservatory with his wife earlier this year. The only help he had was with the roof as it was very windy.
What is even more remarkable about this story is that Alan and Dorothy, Alans wife who is also 77, had never built anything like this in their life! They lived all their lives in the Northampton area and Alan’s trade was making shoes. At one time, when he had his own company, he made boots for FRANK BRUNO AND GEOFF CAPES. And even more remarkable is the fact that in the past few years Alan has suffered a heart attack and suffered form C.O.P.D. which is disease of the lungs..
Alan says ‘As we are both 77 years old I do not think we have done to bad. When you consider that we were in the footwear industry and have no building experience it must be a tribute to the people that made it so easy to build. I had help with the roof from my son in law due to the high winds we were having at the time. We are very pleased with it and spend a lot of time relaxing there. I love it and I am glad that I chose a hipped roof as it creates such a nice atmosphere .
