When the winter months set in and the sun gets harder to find each day, it can seem like ages since we had any really good weather.
And yet for some people the lack of sunlight can cause more than just disappointment. It can lead to depression in some people, and in this case it is likely to lead to a diagnosis of SAD – otherwise known as seasonal affective disorder.
If you suffer from SAD there are things you can do to improve your situation. The most important one is to make sure you get more sunlight. There are light boxes that you can buy and these will improve your symptoms if you sit in front of them for long enough. But there is no substitute for real naturally occurring light, and in this sense it pays to find somewhere in your home that will help you make the most of whatever daylight there is in winter.
It doesn’t take long to realise that a self-build conservatory is the best room to be in. This room always has more windows and a much bigger expanse of glass than any other room in the house. So of course it will let in a great deal more light than you would get sitting anywhere else.
If your symptoms make it difficult to feel positive or normal during the winter months, it is time you thought differently about your self-build conservatory. It might currently be just an occasional room, but that needs to change if you want to make the most of the natural light that comes into the room each and every day. This is true even on days when the sun doesn’t come out.
To start with, make yourself a nice corner to sit in. It should be inviting and comfortable since you will be sitting there for a while each day. Make sure you pick a spot that will maximise the amount of light you will get during the day. You might be better off watching to see where the light and the sun come into your DIY conservatory for a day or two before picking the right spot.
Think about what else you would like to have in this part of your DIY conservatory as well. How about a reading light? A coffee table would be good to have as somewhere to put your drink and your book if you are reading one and you could add some plants nearby too to make things even more pleasant.
As you can see, it is possible to enjoy the winter months even if you are affected by seasonal affective disorder. And if you have a DIY conservatory it could be just what the doctor ordered to improve your symptoms and feel better on a daily basis.
